Top Tip!

Star Chart Good Practice Rules:

Never take an awarded star away. If you feel it is necessary to note the undesirable behaviour remember you are making it into an issue……. Distraction & ignoring stimulate the child to be good in order to receive praise and attention.

Stars means rewards. This can be a favourite toy, outing, or treat. Never take the reward away once achieved with stars.

Remember: Distract, Ignore, Praise, Play, Never Punish

Professional Nanny Conference 2009

Professional Nanny Conference 2009

We are delighted to announce MNT will be attending this years Voice the Union Professional Nanny Conference. Many of you will be aware of the annual Professional Nanny Conference but how many of you have actually attended? This conference is the flagship for all matters related to the work of nannies- a much under-represented sector of the childcare workforce. This year’s programme includes a session on the outcome of the CWDC’s nanny survey which will be used to help plan the future of nannying in the UK. Therefore this year’s conference is not one to be missed- we look forward to seeing you there!

Toilet Training Tips by Frankie Gray

Toilet Training Tips by Frankie Gray

Potty training your toddler should be a fun and exciting process. There are many different books and programs out there which promise ‘potty training in a day’ or ‘potty training in 2 weeks’. I have always found that children are individual, developing and learning at their own pace. If you would like my support and tailored advice please email or call me, alternatively look out for our Potty & Toilet Training Workshop.

To train a child to be dry you need to be consistent and patient.
There is no right age, only a right time – when your child is ready.

First is your child ready? (only you as parent can be the judge of this)

Guide to check of your child is ready:

Your child……
Tells you or others when they want to go or are going
Holds themselves or indicate when they need to go to the toilet
Would like a clean nappy as soon as it is dirty
Talks about the toilet / potty and indicate interest in it
Would rather have some privacy when they are filling their nappy
Goes to the same place to do their business!

Guide to Potty Training:
Look for at least 2 of the above signs of readiness before starting.
Have the potty around the house before starting to use it so that they are used to it. Sit a doll on it!
encourage your child to tell you when they need to go
give your child plenty of positive praise for sitting on the potty and don’t worry that nothing has been produced.
listen to songs or read books on the potty
start at bath time
for every tiny tinkle or business give lots of praise and encouragement
you must never tell your child off or be negative if they fail to use the potty or if they have an accident – let them know that accidents are OK
remember to teach your child to wipe, flush, wash and dry – they can help you empty the potty into the toilet and this in turn will help the transition to the use of the toilet
Make it easy for your child – remain consistent and have the potty at the ready
Show your child how its done – take them with you to the toilet
Make sure your child is dressed appropriately!
Try to make as little fuss over the process of going as possible
Above all be consistent, follow a routine, have everything ready – potty, stickers, charts, tinkle targets, songs etc and BE PATIENT! Try not to be tempted to go back to nappies.
Toilet Training
It is up to you to choose to use the toilet straight away, or to make a transition from potty to toilet. The above principles remain the same.
Some children might find the prospect of using a toilet scary or they might think they will fall in. Reassure your child that the toilet is ok and show them by taking them with you when you go. Include Dad’s in this if possible!
Buy a step and child’s toilet seat, make sure it fits properly and if possible let your child choose a favourite character / design.
Ways to Make Potty and Toilet Training Fun and Exciting
Toilet Targets – Use toilet targets to make the toilet fun and to teach your child to aim.
Fun potties - your child may like to choose a potty. Shop around for a favourite character / design.
Potty training Doll - Anatomically correct drink & wet dolls can help to make toilet training more understandable.
Potty training Watch / countdown timer – this can be a fun reminder that it's potty time!
Books, Videos, & DVDs - toilet training bedtime stories, videos and DVDs are a fun educational way to introduce toilet training to your child, before you start and during the process
Charts & Stickers - toilet training charts and stickers are great motivational tools. Use our printable charts, and remember to keep it positive.
Fun toilet training Pants and Underwear - toilet training pants and underwear can come in fantastic colors and designs. Let your child choose the color of training pants or underwear to wear.
